It’s likely that you’re familiar with physical therapy and what PT practitioners do, but what do you know about orthopedic physical therapy? It’s actually a type of PT where the practitioners have received additional training and experience in the field of orthopedics. This branch of care centralizes injuries and conditions relating to the musculoskeletal system. Research estimates that 1 out of every 2 people in the U.S. has a musculoskeletal condition. If you’re someone who is struggling to manage a musculoskeletal condition, take a moment to learn how orthopedic PT can help you.
What can you expect from orthopedic physical therapy?
You can expect several types of techniques to be used by your therapist during treatment. Orthopedic therapists focus on using techniques and modalities to improve functionality, which is what each of the treatments below is intended to do:
- Strength training — One of the first ways that an orthopedic PT can treat a musculoskeletal disorder is through strength training. Strength-building exercises can be effective for treating muscle injuries, joint conditions and many more types of conditions.
- Ultrasound — An ultrasound during physical therapy is a little bit different from other types of ultrasounds. It’s a PT treatment that transmits heat waves to the skin and other tissue. It’s often helpful for people who are dealing with strains and tendon inflammation.
- Traction — Traction is a method of stretching that involves the use of mechanical equipment to stretch out the neck and back. It’s used most often for patients with compressed nerves around their back. Therapists can use a traction machine to elongate your spine and neck and bring greater relief over time.
- Exercise — Physical therapists use exercise during treatment more than anything else. Most therapists use passive and active movements to improve strength and function. Passive exercise involves exercising muscles through pressure applied by the therapist. Active exercise is performed by the patient. Using a variety of passive and active exercises can help improve muscle strength around an area of injury or dysfunctionality.
- Electrical stimulation and TENS — Transcutaneous electrical neuromuscular stimulation (TENS) is a type of electrical stimulation treatment. Electrical stimulation can be used during PT to target areas of muscle and improve strength and circulation around areas of injury.
- Kinesiology taping — Kinesiology taping is a type of treatment that can improve muscle support around joints. It’s also useful for boosting circulation and reducing inflammation. Orthopedic physical therapists often use kinesiology taping to help athletes who’ve become injured.
What conditions do most orthopedic physical therapists deal with on a daily basis?
Orthopedic physical therapists see and treat a variety of musculoskeletal conditions every day. If you’ve been dealing with a musculoskeletal condition that has negatively impacted your comfort and functionality, it’s time to consider treatment with an orthopedic PT. Some of the most common conditions that these PTs regularly deal with include:
- Arthritis.
- Headaches and concussions.
- Carpal tunnel syndrome.
- Knee instability.
- Limited range of motion.
- Lower back pain.
- Lymphedema.
- Osteoporosis.
- Plantar fasciitis.
