Today, most people work jobs where they sit for several hours. This leads to a sedentary lifestyle causing your body to become stiff from inactivity. Stretching can help with this stiffness and release the tension that is built up throughout the day. Try some of these simple stretches before bed for a night of better sleep and to wake up feeling ready to take on the day!
-
Seated Forward Fold
This stretch targets the hamstrings. Sit on the ground keeping your back flat and knees straight. Flex your feet and fold over, bringing your chest to your knees. Hold this pose for 15-30 seconds. Repeat this stretch a few times and then switch to the next stretch.
-
Child’s Pose
Child’s Pose is useful for stretching the hips and thighs. Begin by sitting on your knees and put your weight towards your heels. Bend at the waist bringing your chest to the floor. Extend your hands above your head or to the side to get a full-body stretch. Hold this for 15-30 seconds and repeat as needed.
-
Overhead Triceps and Shoulder Stretch
The shoulders hold a great amount of tension from sitting hunched over a computer. Bring one arm overhead and drop your forearm behind you, resting it on your back between your shoulder blades. With your other hand, grab right above your bent elbow and pull gently, until you feel a stretch in your shoulder and the back of your arm. Hold this pose for 20-30 seconds and then switch arms.
-
Lunging Hip Flexor Stretch
The hips tend to be neglected. For this stretch, all you have to do is kneel on one knee and place your other leg in front of you at a 90-degree angle. Then, lean forward until you feel a slight stretch. Remember to flex your glutes and hold for at least 20 seconds. Repeat as needed.
-
Cobra (Back Stretch)
This stretch is a quick and easy stretch to loosen up those back muscles. Lie on your stomach, stretch your legs back and rest the tops of the feet on the floor. Spread your hands on the floor under your shoulders. Tuck your elbows back into your body. You should feel a stretch in your core.
